A Double Dose Of Victory For Roger Penske

by Jim on August 18, 2013 · 9 comments

A quick survey here; who thought that Joey Logano would score a Logano at MISSprint Cup victory before Brad Keselowski this season? Yeah, that’s what I thought, and I’ll bet the two hands I see in the back are Joey’s parents. Dare I mention that with three wins in his Cup career, this kid the many thought was going to be a bust has one more victory during the span of his career than NASCAR’s most popular driver? I’m not looking to start a fight, it’s just an observation that maybe Joey Logano really does belong after all. I have more to say about Dale Earnhardt Jr. later- hang in there Junior fans.

What a weekend for owner Roger Penske. Logano’s victory comes22at MIS one day after A.J. Allmendinger piloted Penske’s ‘22’ to another win on a road course at Mid-Ohio. For this fan, it’ s a win-win: Allmendinger and Logano are tales of redemption, and by all accounts Roger Penske is one of the more stand up owners in the business.

Aj at Mid OhioAllmendinger keeps rewarding Penske for giving him a second chance after the racer’s failed drug test in 2012. Every time A.J. stands in front of that camera, you see gratitude in his attitude.

Let’s face it, where Logano’s concerned, a lot more people had him going the way of22 at Mid Ohio Casey Atwood than the way of Jeff Gordon. One may argue Long Tall Joey has a ways to go to truly become “Sliced Bread,” but there’s no denying the kid belongs. Was he brought to the Sprint Cup series too soon? Who knows? From here, it looks like Penske has a nice young one-two punch with Logano and Keselowski.

Do you think Logano finds a certain sweetness in holding off Kevin Harvick? I have an opinion about that.

Let’s just say this win provides a nice little “in your face” to everyone spouting that “Trust Fund” talk. Personally, I want to upchuck every time someone criticizes a young athlete because either his parents were famous (like Earnhardt) or “rich” (like Joey Logano.) Such talk smacks of sour grapes and jealousy and makes otherwise savvy men as Tony Stewart look like petulant children.

I also saw a few negative comments concerning Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s comments on TV following the race. For those of you a little slow on the uptake, Junior is not comfortable on camera, on the spot. He never has been, nor will he likely ever be. The man was having a good race and a tire went down. If you weed through it all, it seems from here Earnhardt has a healthy attitude about his performance, and his consistency. Some days, the breaks don’t go your way. As for those who say he’d never be where he is without his last name, give it a rest. That’s something we can never know. Nothing against them, but it sure doesn’t like the Earnhardt name has given Kerry or Jeffrey any breaks. Are you going to tell me Dale isn’t a better driver than they are? This kind of talk is pure foolishness.

Allmendinger’s win validates him as a driver who belongs. Logano’s victory gives “The Captain” two car in Chase contention. Remember- I said Brad would make it. As crazy as this season has been, don’t rule out Joey Logano.

Hey Jim! Love that Dinger! I am hoping he lands a full time Cup ride in 2014…even a small team could take him a step closer to where he should be with his talent! I’m not a fan of Logano or Keslowski..but The Dinger is my guy! On another note..a rumor ( they are so rampant and lots of fun when the press throws them out..very few stick..but it’s fun!) I see SHR may have..maybe..offered Kurt Busch a 4th SHR car in 2014! Should this rumor stick to the wall and NOT hit the fan…and Busch takes the ride…that’s my dream team! If you look back I posted this exact scenario a couple weeks ago.. Guess SHR reads your column! I’m excited if it happens (although if I’m Newman I’m bummed!). Man..three hot heads with MEGA talent! Look out Hendricks! Hope Patrick has her mothering skills ready!

Oh! A bad thought just ran through my crazy brain..is Stewart returning?? Ever?? In the “rumor” mill there are those saying his leg is a lot worse then SHR is putting out..naahhh…it’s good…hopefully! Please!

I enjoyed all the races this weekend even though it seemed like one by one all my favored drivers went down. I was happy for Dinger but I was rooting for Kurt Busch in Cup. That will be a terrific story if he makes the Chase. Jimmie’s curse at Michigan continues!

@Josie- Silly Season is in overdrive. Whoever thought that after the way they fought like little boys that Stewart would ever offer a ride to Kurt? I hope he stays at Furniture Row myself- but who knows? As for Smoke’s injuries, I really wouldn’t be surprised if he misses the rest of the season.

@Vicki. It was a good weekend to be Roger Penske. Rick Hendrick? Not so much.

Nice article supporting Logano, we have long thought the harsh criticism of him was unwarranted. He is a talent and will continue to rise. He seems to fit in nicely at Penske. The third wheel syndrome is alive and well still at JGR and the new name is Hamlin. Logano would be smack in the middle of the top 10 if it wasn’t for those back to back blown tires, the Kyle mess and the 25 point doc. Get in that dumb Chase Joey!

@Sully- LOL! Sooner or later, the cream rises to the top. He’s taken a lot of guff for taking on Harvick, Smoke, Newman & Hamlin. Some of us might actually consider that consideration for respect. Funny- you never hear Hamlin saying that the way Brad Keselowski drives- he’ll never win a championship, do you? These next few weeks will be interesting.

People call him a wimp…etc. He never once backed down from any of those resident bullies, some say his father fought his battles, no way. The same motley crew always wanted to steal his lunch money, but he never gave it. Good for him!

@Sully. Regardless of how one sees what went down in Fontana, folks learned that day that when it comes to Logano, if you mess with the bull, you’ll get the horns.
