I’m confused, I was under the impression that the 24 Hours of Daytona, was last week. Seriously, I have been known to get on NASCAR’s case from time to time. This time in the interest of fairness, I have to give them two thumbs up, for taking the time to repair the track, and let the show go on.
In reply to Jim’s article yesterday I said I’ve been a little let down by “The 500.” It tends to be so hyped and so anticipated, that it usually has trouble living up to it’s billing.
Today would have to be the exception for me. The changes in the restrictor plate, as well as backing off and letting the drivers do their own thing about bump drafting worked as they wanted. The racing more closely approximated the plate races of old. This one will go down as remembered for it’s racing, rather than it’s wrecking.
This race had it’s feel good ending, but beyond that, it had a lot for the teams to feel good about- with the exception of Penske and Dodge, that is. The Junior Nation, while a little disappointed, had to be pleased to have had such a strong showing, as well as being at the top of the Hendrick heap, (not to be confused with some of the trade ins that his dealerships sell).
The Fords had a good showing. Childress, as well as his drivers have to feel pretty good. Clint made a good partner move that should go down well in tomorrow’s team meeting. Plus, Earnhardt- Ganassi feeling validation for making an off season move that couldn’t have been the easiest to make. Bass Pro Shops are
reportedly in the final year of their contract. I don’t know about you, but It looked to me like Johnny Morris, (Bass Pro Shops, founder and majority owner) seemed to be having a pretty good time in victory lane.
This had to be a little bittersweet for Martin Truex, but his showing was strong as well. Jamie’s victory seemed to be pretty popular with the other drivers, judging from their reactions during the cool down lap. I loved it because, it’s always to see a "home boy" win.
The only problem I can see is that NASCAR has to try to follow this at California next week.

only ways to fix fontana..tear it down..or add chicanes..lol..the track is a total bust racing wise..nascar shoulda rushed the spoilers back in for cali..might help over the wings a bit
me and my pals on the nascar chat place i hang my hat decided digger is who messed up the track and created potholes..but since DW is diggers sugardaddy..he wont be going away anytime soon :(
Funny how the ads for Fontana show wrecks and action from other tracks and nothing from theirs.
32 years since it’s last repaving, the potholes in the track really shows just how bad of shape Daytona, NA$CAR’s flagship speedway, really is. They can spend $16 million on the amusement park and zoo in the infield but can’t repave the track which is in desperate need of it. I think somebody’s priorities are in the wrong place.
Congrats to Jamie Mac on his win. He proved the talking heads from Fox wrong. As to DW’s varmint, he’s already worn out his welcome. So have those animated critters they show on the screen too.
@ Rob
My solution for Fontana is to cover it with dirt, including a load or 2 from Ascot. I’ve never seen a 2mi. dirt track, but you can bet your bippy I’d be watching.
You, & your buds may be right. Let’s just hope Digger was in the hole when they patched it. LOL
@ Mad Man
I was thinking the exact same when I saw the promos.
As for the paving, well they got a little of it repaved.
About the carnival in the infield. I know how they can make some much needed cash. They could put one of those “Whack a Mole,” or in this case “Whack a Gopher” games on the midway. I’m guessing it would prove pretty popular with the fans.
The winners could get a picture of Brian on a dartboard.
Dang, this could be huge.
Memo to Daytona : donot repave ,remove it all, down to the dirt and build it back up from the base, with todays treatments for asphalt you will have a smoother and longer lasting surface .I forget you are in the racetrack business, so you know how to do it .
