Back 40 Racing & Other Off-Weekend Fun

beater cars by GenBug Man, this weekend off couldn’t come at a worse time. I want to know if Kyle Busch will make the chase, I want to know if Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne and Mark Martin will stay in the chase, or if Juan Pablo Montoya can stick around to make his first chase. Last time we had a weekend off, it came at a perfect time. My wife was at a blogger’s convention in Chicago, and it gave me a chance to stay focused on my “Mr. Mom” duties.

But since NASCAR Cup racing has the weekend off, I’ll need to plan accordingly. Fortunately, the opening in the schedule creates opportunity to check some other things out. Now I need to decide how to pass the time.

Here are some possibilities:

Watch the Nationwide race in Montreal. I WILL be doing that. I am one of thoseJacques in Esses by kenmores weird NASCAR fans who actually likes the road courses. I was also one of those rare birds who was bummed when open wheel stars like Jacques Villeneuve and Patrick Carpentier didn’t take in NASCAR. I’m also a bit of a closet “Said Head”.

Montreal provides some pretty wild finishes (remember the one with Marcos Ambrose and Robby Gordon trading paint?), so I won’t be missing this.

Offrado in Elsinore by Insomnya 3AM Catch other racing series on the tube. Out of the corner of my eye this morning at work, I watched a little off-road truck racing. Now that was some racing right there! SPEED was showing a race in Lake Elsinore, California and it was a rush. I watched a truck hop a hill, land on its nose and flip. The driver still walked away.

The course had the crazy series of esses and you should see these drivers power slide in the turns. It was a rush.

Do some racing of your own. Did I stutter? You have to check this out: Thanks for aracing by Your Pal Marnie reader named Dave Hartwick, I was turned on to “Back 40″ Racing. (Click for video). This video comes courtesy of a guy who calls himself the “Land Yacht Captain.” This field is slicker than snot on a door knob. These are just a bunch of good ol’ boys racing what they brung in true roots-racing fashion. You can’t help but laugh your head off. Makes me wish I had the old 1974 AMC Matador. Or better yet, my father-in-law had a couple of old classics for this: an old red Subaru sedan my wife’s brothers nicknamed the “Exploding Tomato”, or his old Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme we named the “Big Daddy Pimp Mobile” with a broken digital speedometer.

This might also be a good weekend to go down to the old go kart track and have fun with the kids.

SO SPeedway by RACINGCAIN Support your local dirt track. For me, the Southern Oregon Speedway- a 1/3 mile dirt track is but a couple of miles away. I can go down and watch the modifieds, the pro stocks, the dwarf cars and super 4s go at it. Personally, I am a fan of the Jones brothers, Preston and Parker- a pair of local high school kids. These boys are good, and if Preston (a recent Crater High graduate) has his way, we’ll see him at the Cup level soon.

Roots racing needs our support. This is a good weekend to represent. By the way, if you want a good casual read of dirt racing out on the Great Plains, check out “The Rest Of The Dirt.” It’s a good read.

Fantasy football time. Truth be told, I enjoy football almost as much as I do NASCAR. I am a radio play-by-play announcer for my old high school, I love college football “Hook ‘Em Horns!” and I also enjoy NFL football. Conveniently, the online draft for one of the leagues I’m in is tomorrow night.

Hmmm. I guess this weekend doesn’t have to be so boring after all.

What are you doing this weekend?

I just through watching the Re-Max ARCA race and getting ready for the Truck race. And I have some video of some NTPA tractor pullls to watch. Cup cars have around 850hp, well try watching a unlimited class tractor with 5…yeah five engines with 1000hp+ each and rear wheel speeds of 160mph or more going for a full pull.
So in between doing laundry and cleaning house, I still have enough to watch to satisfy my “need for speed” this weekend!!!

Cleaning the house. Watching Kennedy’s funeral. Gonna watch Nationwide tomorrow. A friend of mine is going stir crazy with no Cup race this weekend, don’t have the qualifying, or any of the BS that comes before the race.

I enjoy RACING. On TV this weekend I found racing for ARCA, NASCAR Truck Series, Rolex Sports cars, IRL, Formula 1, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and Moto GP. And my local short tracks are running. This sounds just fine to me. Racers know the world does not begin and end with the Cup telecast each week. There is a whole lot more to the sport than just that.
