Bench Racing with NASCAR Tech Patrick Reynolds: A Tribute To Race Parents

Today’s post by Patrick Reynolds is sure to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face. It’s good medicine for the middle of the week……

Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of NASCAR Sprint Cup Racing.

“Daddy, can you come here?”

The weather today is perfect. A beautiful day for racing.

“Daddy, I want to try on my princess gown.”

Let’s go down to pit road for a word with our pole sitter.

“Daddy, Can I have a snack?”

Now here are the keys to today’s race strategy.

“Daddy, I’m thirsty.”

We spoke to one of the championship favorites earlier. Here is what he had to say.

“Daddy, I need a paper towel. I spilled my drink.”

… is the crew chief on the car that was fastest in practice yesterday. He is standing by.

“Daddy, my bear wants to give you a hug.”

This team owner has a good shot at standing in victory lane later today.

“Daddy, what are you doing?”

The speedway has made some improvements to the garage area.

“Daddy, I have to go potty.”

Now we are using a new tire compound here this weekend.

“Daddy, have you seen my princess wand?”

Let’s go trackside for opening ceremonies.

“Daddy, have you seen my sticker book?”

Ladies and Gentleman, please rise and remove your hats for today’s invocation and National Anthem.

“Daddy, do you like my dollhouse?”

Let us pray. God we ask for your safety during this race today…

“Daddy, will you do my hair?”

Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light…

“Daddy I want to play with Play-Doh.”

And now, for the four most famous words in motorsports.

“Daddy, let’s play in my room.”

Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!

“Daddy, will you do a puzzle with me?”

The field rolls off of pit road behind the tow of the pace car.

“Daddy, will you read this book to me?”

Let’s meet the men who make up the starting lineup.

“Daddy, will you color with me?”

One more time around and we will be going green. Caution lights are off.

“Daddy, I have to find my ballet shoes.”

Pace car is in.

“Daddy, do you know where my Cinderella hat is?”

Reach up and pull those belts tight one more time.

“Daddy?”

Green. Green. Green. Boogity, boogity, boogity! LET’S GO RACIN’ BOYS!

“Can we go outside and play?”

“Sure sweetie. I’ll get my coat.”

“I love you Dad.”

“I love you too pumpkin.”

Sometimes one doesn’t have to look far to find something to write about. At times material basically presents itself. Like a comedian cracking jokes and delivering punch lines by simply observing the world around him.

Many of you have your own version of my three years old, three feet tall, carrot topped little girl. With the Shootout and ARCA races taking place in Daytona this weekend, race fans can see a light at the end of their cabin fever tunnel. I wish a happy racing season to all the racing Moms and Dads out there who, like me, love motorsports but who also know what is REALLY important.

Hey Pat great post. Yes, I agree; we all know what is most important in life. Many years ago, 19 years to be exact, I lost contact with my two daughters. This was due to moving around alot after retiring from the military so I lost their address, their mom’s new last name, etc. All I could recall was they lived in or around Sioux City, Ia.
A few months back, I received an email alert from reunion.com, staing taht a 30 yo female was searching for me from S. Sioux City, Neb. At the time my youngest girl would be the same age. I have done all I can financially to locate her and her sisiter who lives in S. Sioux City, Ia. So far everything I get back is either an old adress or a disconnected phone. But I’m not giving up, I will keep trying for as long as it takes.
