Upon Further Review: Rodgers Rocks

So much for the demise of the Green Bay Packers. While the admittedly mishandled trade of Brett Favre was going on, I about blew a gasket when FSN sports reporter Tom Looney predicted a 4-12 on JT The Brick’s “Game Time React” on Fox Sports Radio. Apparently, these wags have never heard the words of Vince Lombardi or John Madden who remind us the essence of football is blocking and tackling.

Fortunately for one Aaron Rodgers, the Packers are blocking quite fine, thank you very much. The one-time UCal stud threw for 328 and 3 scores as Green bay pounded out a tidy little 45-28 victory over Detroit- not the kind of win you gloat over, but it it’s better than the 0-2 records the likes of San Diego and Seattle have.

I’ll tell you what I like about this guy: he’s got huzpah. Others might use more colorful terms to describe that Rodgers has iron in his gut. You listen to the post-game and A-Rod is talking like he expects to do this well, and this success is no shock to him. It’s a trait that will serve him well as he succeeds a legend. It well also enable him to endure the game that will inavariably come when he lays an egg- my guess when the Packers face off against Chicago. Rodgers will have the presence to endure the pressure, pick himself up and get ready to do it again.

This is what a leader does, and you look for leadership from your QB.

Rodgers and the Pack will do just fine. Some other young guns acquitted themselves nicely. J.T. O’ Sullivan went for over 300 in the Niners win over Seattle, the first time a San Fran QB has done so since the Bronze Age. Though the game will be better remembered for blown calls, Jay Cutler showed signs of his potential by throwing a for a load of real estate against San Diego. He showed some poise by leading the Broncos down the field for a last minute score and a clutch 2-point conversion. Eli Manning looked steady in another win for the G-Men and Trent Edwards was solid, as was Kyle Orton in a losing cause for the Bears. Let us not forget Matt Cassel. His main job was to not screw up and and he delivered in the Pats win over Brett and the Jets.

It’s not quite a QB renessiance, but hey, it was a good day for the field generals yesterday.
