And the winner at Fontana is…….
Well, you’re gonna have to read on to find out. We know this- that to win at Fontana, you need speed. Speed is attained by horsepower. At Fontana, you’ve got a wide race track that will allow drivers to go three and four wide. If you’re too slow, you’ll go…out.
I’ll give you a hint on who’ll win by reminding you of the similarities of the California Speedway to Michigan. Yes, the track at Fontana was modeled after the track at Irish Hills. There’s lots of room to run around, multiple lines for a racer to ride. What I’m saying is this is NOT a race about pit strategy, it’s not a race about cornering skill. We’re not going to see any drafting schemes either like you might find with Bristol or Daytona. It’s going to be racing pure and simple: it’s all about speed.
Who’s been the fastest lately? In my humble opinion, the guys who’ve looked really fast lately have been Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Kyle’s Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson, and…….Kyle’s brother, Kurt Busch.
Kurt Busch will win at Fontana.
Not only is he running fast, he’s got the support of one of the top teams in NASCAR- Penske Racing. How many times has Kurt DNF’d because of bad equipment? I can’t think of one. He’s made errors in judgment, but the recent win at Pocono that preceded his recent win at Michigan, seems to have given way to a re-birth, and a renessiance of uncommon common sense on the part of the driver of the #2 Miller Lite Dodge. Smart racing and good equipment are hard to beat. Not to mention, his tenuous entry into the Chase fray serving as an additional motivator.
Now please understand I’m not being a “homer.” I have no special place in my heart for Kurt. I’d really rather see the humble yet smart Ryan Newman or America’s favorite country boy Dale Earnhardt, Jr. get in. Unfortunately, Newman hasn’t been especially consistent, and Earnhardt almost seems to be his worst enemy these days, trying too hard to win, thus seeming to hurt his equipment, and well, unfortunately the equipment DEI has been providing doesn’t seem up to par either. Not a good combination at clutch time. If I were really being a homer in picking the winner of the race at my birthplace, I’d be picking Jeff Gordon. Gordo just doesn’t need this win and he knows it. I think he’s just defending turf right now.
I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race. There’s a reason why they race on track and not paper. There truly are 43 possible winners. Just look at tonight’s Busch Series race. It’s been up for grabs. I just think Kurt Busch has seized some of Tony Stewart’s mojo and will cruise to victory.
Stay tuned.

It looks like you might be wrong. It looks like the younger Busch brother has the edge tonight. I’m still pulling for Junior, though.
